Women Build
The 2010 Women Build will be starting up early summer in Hamilton. Make sure you sign up on our new volunteer hub for more information.
What is Women Build?
Women Build is a Habitat for Humanity International mission that encourages women and girls to make a difference building homes and communities through funding and constructing Habitat homes. Women crews around the world and more homes are added each year as affiliates, donors, have built more than 1,200 Habitat houses and sponsors discover the impact of women volunteers and their resources.
The need is great, but it can be met. Women can be part of the solution -- one house, one family at a time. Women Build challenges and empowers women to build safe, healthy housing where children can flourish and grow to be all that they can be. Throughout the United States and around the world, women are positively influencing the future of children by making homeownership a present reality for families.
What makes this mission so special?
This mission is not about exclusion; it is about empowerment. Habitat for Humanity believes a program like the Women Build is a powerful tool for educating and supporting the women of our community. Over Fifty percent (50%) of our affiliate homeowners are single women. Women are increasingly buying homes on their own and becoming involved in home repair. This is an opportunity to teach women about the homes they own. This is also an opportunity to challenge preconceived ideas about what women are capable of or willing to do. Most importantly, it is about women doing their part to overcome poverty housing and providing a decent, safe home for a family in need.
Why should I get involved?
Statistics* show that children raised in a home owned by their parents are: 33% LESS likely to give birth as an unmarried teenager 40% LESS likely to be idle at age 20 35% LESS likely to receive welfare 20% MORE likely to graduate from high school 62% MORE likely to acquire a post-secondary education
Meet the Smith family, our partner family who will be receiving the women build home.
My name is Dawn Smith I am a 30 year old single mom of three children; Taylor (9), Alyssa (8), and Joshua Jr. (5). As well as being a busy mother with my children being involved with school activities such as sports and etc., the rest of my time is consumed by work and study time. I am in college at Miami University working on a degree in Nursing. When I get free time I like to be spend time with my family. I applied for a Habitat house because my husband passed away a little over 2 years ago leaving me to be a single parent with 3 children. I know I could not afford a house payment and all that goes with homeownership, but I felt I was wasting money on rent. Also, with renting I often worry about relocating my family if or when the landlord raises the rent or because they are not fixing things in the house. Habitat is a blessing, making it possible for my children and I to have a place to call home; something that as a family we can participate in together. With Habitat, we have been offered the opportunity to work and meet many dedicated and special people. Getting approved for a Habitat house has already changed our lives by giving me and my children hope for being able to achieve a more stable future. |
