What can I do to become a Volunteer?

There are many ways to become a volunteer. If you are the type that loves to hit nail on the head, then construction might be up your alley. If you're the keep your hands clean type, non-construction is a way to go. Once you have decided on what you wanted to commit to, you have the opportunity to get involved with a committee. Now that you have decided, it is time to get you registered to be a volunteer.

Coldwell Banker Staff volunteer their time for Habitat.

Our Southeast Indiana Chapter needs help in order to help people in need.
We have immediate needs for four important volunteer opportunities:

Family Support Committee Member
  Description:
Habitat affiliates are committed to the development and uplifting of families and communities, not only the construction of houses. Members of this committee are matched with a Habitat Partner Family to provide guidance and support for the family. Family Support members guide partner families through the process of obtaining a home from Habitat and track "sweat equity" contributions. They also provide basic training in budgeting, planning, and home ownership and support families in their transition to home ownership.
Skills Needed:
Caring, considerate, supportive, and friendly with an interest in nurturing a Habitat Partner Family to help them become successful homeowners. Ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality is needed. Understanding the difference between "enabling" and "empowering" is important. Life experience including homeownership and experience working with families of low socioeconomic status are helpful.
Time Commitment:
One evening meeting per month and contact with your partner family by phone or in person at least twice per month for ~ 2 years. Total ~4 Hours per Month.
Training:
Current Chapter Family Support Committee members provide training as needed. Additional training information available through Habitat for Humanity International's website and conference calls.

Construction Site Leader
  Description:
Help volunteers help us! Construction volunteers are vitally important to Habitat’s mission, but many of them have never set foot on a construction site! We need you to lead them. Plan work days and lead volunteers and partner families in the construction or rehab of local homes. Encourage volunteers to provide a safe and fun experience while producing quality work. Make sure tools, materials, and equipment are on site when needed. Coordinate construction tasks with construction manager, subcontractors, sponsors, volunteer groups, and homeowners to ensure a positive experience. Arrange inspections and permits, approve work done by sub-contractors, and approve invoices.
Skills Needed:
Ability to plan and coordinate projects to build and renovate homes for partner families. Willingness to lead by example and show patience with unskilled volunteers and homeowners. Mature and self-motivated with ability to work with limited supervision. Ability to work with, motivate, and teach diverse groups of people, including age, race, gender, and socio-economic backgrounds. Enjoy working with people and able to manage time and resources. Familiarity with construction practices, code requirements, and ability to read plans.
Time Commitment:
8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturdays during construction season, ~3 hours per week for planning, tools, and materials, and attend one construction meeting per month. Commitments are for one project which may span 2 to 12 months. Total ~11 Hours per Week
Training:
Current Chapter Site Leaders and TriState's Construction Manager provide training and guidance as needed. Additional training information available through Habitat for Humanity International's website and conference calls.
